The Draped Bust design was based on a drawing by the famous artist Gilbert Stuart. US Mint designer Robert Scot used this as a basis for designing the coins.
Draped Bust Coins represent the very early work of the United States Mint. Some of the coins had extremely low mintages and are very scarce. Some years feature various major and minor varieties.
One of the most famous and valuable United States coins is the 1804 Draped Bust Silver Dollar. These coins were actually minted 30 years after the date as special diplomatic gifts. A small number of the coins were also minted as restrikes for coin collectors. Only 15 specimens of the coin are known today.
